I’m closer to the Golden Dawn

Immersed in Crowley’s uniform

Of imagery

I’m living in a silent film

Portraying Himmler’s sacred realm

Of dream reality

I’m frightened by the total goal

Drawing to the ragged hole

And I ain’t got the power anymore

No, I ain’t got the power anymore

I’m the twisted name on Garbo’s eyes

Living proof of Churchill’s lies

I’m destiny

I’m torn between the light and dark

Where others see their targets

Divine symmetry

Should I kiss the viper’s fang

Or herald loud the death of Man?

I’m sinking in the quicksand of my thought

And I ain’t got the power anymore

Don’t believe in yourself

Don’t deceive with belief

Knowledge comes with death’s release

I’m not a prophet or a stone age man

Just a mortal with potential of a superman

I’m living on

I’m tethered to the logic of Homo Sapien

Can’t take my eyes from the great salvation

Of bullshit faith

If I don’t explain what you ought to know

You can tell me all about it on the next Bardot

I’m sinking in the quicksand of my thought

And I ain’t got the power anymore

They say if you can remember the 60s you weren’t there… or maybe it’s just Keith Richards who says that.

Whatever, if you can’t remember listening to this in the 70s you definitely weren’t there. In this outstanding song from Bowie’s first great creative period he namechecks just about everything that was haunting the post hippie zeitgeist: the Magicians of the Golden Dawn, Alistair Crowley, Nietzsche’s Supermen, Churchill, Himmler and cultural icons Greta Garbo and Brigit Bardot. It is an anthem to a lost age.

Being in the know, the cognoscenti don’t need telling, but for the rest of us….

The Magicians of the Golden Dawn are the most culturally influential esoteric group of our time.

Aleister Crowley, a powerful black magician, haunted a generation’s imagination with his maxims: ‘Do what you will be the whole of the law’ and ‘Love is the law; love under will’. He was called ‘the most evil man in the world’, and referred to himself as Meta Therion- the Great Beast. I prefer his other name Perturarbo – I endure.

‘Churchill’s lies’ might refer to the idea that after the 2nd World War there would be a land fit for heroes to return home to.

German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is most remembered for his ‘Thus Spoke Zarathusa’, about the ancient Persian prophet Zoroaster. The novel gave rise to the idea of the Ubermench or Supermen. These days we tend to think of the comic book hero, but Neitzsche meant a morally superior being, who rather than slavishly follow the dictates of church and state would decide their own moral code based on the Darwinian idea of ‘Survival of the fittest’. His ideas are echoed in the verse beginning ‘I’m not a prophet or a stone age man’… and ends with… ‘can’t take my eyes from the great salvation of bullshit faith.’

Nietzsche influenced the Nazis, especially Himmler, the architect of the Aryan underpinning of the whole sorry regime.

Himmler set up the SS along the lines of the ancient order of Teutonic Knights, and sought proof the Aryan master race was descended from ancient supermen from Ultima Thule in the far north. He believed the ancient Aryans fled to high places after an Atlantis like catastrophe. To prove his theory he sent eugenicists to Tibet to measure the local peoples’ skulls looking for evidence of their Aryan ancestry. He also tried to revive ancient Aryan paganism, elements of which are seen in the Nazi Nuremburg Rallies.

Alongside the worship of the blond Nordic ideal (of course not one of the senior Nazis had those physical traits) was a deep hatred for the inferior races, including Africans, Slavs, Jews and Gypsies, who were only fit for slave labour or not fit to live at all. Himmler set up the first concentration camp at Dachau.

Ironic when you consider that in 1930 Hitler confessed to confidants that his relatives were trying to blackmail him because they had proof his grandfather was Jewish.

Doing the research I’ve just discovered I share a birthday with Himmler! Jesus, Mary and Joseph what did I do to deserve this? Ok, I know it’s not all about me, but they never tell you that on the birthday cards do they?

Oh no, it’s all… You share a birthday with Nobel Prize Winner the nuclear physicist Niels Bohr; Louis Leakey – paleoanthropologist and discoverer of the early hominid Pananthropus; Olympic Gold ice skater Jayne Torville and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It’s never Heinrich Himmler, Vladimir Putin (well, maybe if you’re Russian), Oliver North or Simon Cowell, is it?

As we are all children of our time, the frightening thing is that if things had worked out differently with the Battle of Britain, I might be sitting here thinking…. Isn’t that wonderful, I share a birthday with the glorious Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler. Well I wouldn’t of course. I’d have been well exterminated. But someone might have; probably someone a lot more Aryan, and straight.

But despite the infinite alternate realities postulated by quantum physics, I am pretty damn certain that in no timeline across the multiverse someone is sitting there thinking…  Brilliant, I share a birthday with Simon Cowell.

‘It will either be a disaster or everything will be Hunky Dory.’

This is such a good post, Paul, and your reference to Simon Cowell is hilarious. I probably would have survived the Aryan look test but my philanthropist and tolerant outlook on life would have been most unwelcome.

You’ve always got a place in my Master-Race Robbie!

Although I’m not too sure you’d want to attend any of the club house meetings!

Although if you do… BRING A CAKE!

I am sorry that you never had the chance to sit down for a few days with David Bowie and pick his brains Paul but in the absence of that you do a damn good job or getting inside his head. He obviously was a detailed as you are in taking the perception we have of history and turning it on its ear and making us think about the implications of the actions of others. I agree it is unlikely that anyone will boast about sharing a birthday with Simon Cowell… However I think that you personify the personality traits of those born on October 7th.

For Librans born on October 7th, being analytical and creative comes naturally. They are charming in their mannerism and blessed with an instinctive temperament. These people usually have a humanitarian approach to life and are tactful and understanding. However, what makes them different from their counterparts is their intelligence, wittiness and philosophical bent of mind. Born under the zodiacal group of Libra, they are naturally loyal, fair and just. They have a strong sense of justice and dislike unfairness totally. They are also generally neat, tidy, careful and organized with a usual tendency to pay particular attention to detail. October 7th folks have an idealistic, dreamy side that can be occasionally moody and self-absorbed with the need for quiet periods in order to think deeply and reflect

    love and hugs

Thank you for that brilliant summary!

PS I was also born on Sunday…
And the child born on the Sabbath Day is good, blithe, bonny and Gay.
